IBM has had ongoing research and progress in the field of AI since the nineteen fifties.
There has been slow but steady progress every year, but when presented to the public it doesn't match their imagination so they don't acknowledge it as real AI.
None the less; every so often a display is made of how far we have gotten, such as the Watson machine on Jeopardy game.
Last I heard that one is now being used to help the medical people diagnose rare conditions.
