I know no one can give a definite answer to that question, yet, but it seems like a lot of the top physicists and other "intelligent" people are saying that we probably are in a simulation. If that's true, then could we be turned off, permanently, whenever the persons, or person running the simulation feels like it? Maybe we get turned off and on everyday?
Is there any proof to suggest that we are in a simulation because if there isn't, saying that we most probably are in a simulation is no better than saying God did everything without the need for proof to back up those claims. I find the possibility that we are in a simulation to be very disturbing and makes me feel like everything we do is pointless. And what kind of sick person or persons would create a world of self aware life only to make an awful large number of these self aware people suffer and live in misery?
Is it really more likely that we are in a simulation, because as a non physicist, I've gotta say that it sounds like a lot of what these physicists come out with is pure fantasy talk, but what do I know?

I don't think there's any way to prove it one way or the other.
The idea behind it is this:
It would be possible, with a fast enough and large enough computer, to simulate everything that happens on Earth. This computer would contain more information than Earth so it obviously couldn't be contained within Earth. Right now a computer that size is science fiction, but it ought to eventually exist.
We don't ever just run one simulation. Someone simulating the past or other possible worlds would be running hundreds, maybe millions of simulations. The simulated people in all of those computers would believe themselves to be real.
If there are millions of simulated worlds and just one real world, the odds are that the one you live in is a simulation.

The physicists that said that weren't respected I'm sure of it. There is no credible proof, its not the matrix so get your head out of the "i'm the one" cloud and apply your thinking skills to something more productive.

I've never heard a physicist say we are in a computer simulation, but that sounds ridiculous. There is literally no evidence or reason to suspect that.

If we are in a simulation, the people who are running our simulation are in another simulation too?

You're pretty much asking a rhetorical question. No one knows. But it's nice
to see someone pondering that question :)

what...are you on about...this is real
