i did the expriment and i weghit the stuff but i don't know how to calculate the simplest fromula of magnseuim oxide: help please
Trial 1) :
1) mass of magnesium and beaker = ( 30.357 grams ).
2) mass of empty beaker = ( 29.832 grams ).
3) mass of magnesium = ( 0.525 grams ).
4) mass of crucible, cover, and product = (45.800 grams )
5) mass of empty crucible and cover = ( 43.060 grams )
6) mass of product = ( 1.94 grams )
7 ) mass of oxygen = ( 1.415 grams )
calculate the simplest formula for magnesium oxide for trial 1:
______________________________________…
Trial 2) :
1) mass of magnesium and beaker = ( 30.212 grams ).
2) mass of empty beaker = ( 29.832 grams ).
3) mass of magnesium = ( 0.38 grams ).
4) mass of crucible, cover, and product = (49.506 grams )
5) mass of empty crucible and cover = ( 45.308 grams )
6) mass of product = ( 4.198 grams )
7 ) mass of oxygen = ( 3.818 grams )
calculate the simplest formula for magnesium oxide for trial 2
--------------------------------------…
u don't have to do both of them , but if u do i will appriciate that !!
thank u ^_^

You have done all the hard work. Now proceed with the final result:
Trial 1:
Mass og Mg = 0.525g
Mass of oxygen reacted = 1.415g
Divide each mass by the respective atomic mass:
Mg = 0.525/ 24.305 = 0.0216
O = 1.415/16 = 0.0884
O/Mg = 0.0884/0.0216 = 4
Simplest formula = MgO4 which is not correct
Try trial 2:
Mass of Mg = 0.38g
Mass of O = 3.818g
Divide by atomic mass
Mg = 0.38/24.305 = 0.0156
O = 3.818/16 = 0.2386
O/Mg = 0.2386/0.0156 = 15.3
Formula = MgO15
The correct answer for magnesium oxide is MgO. There is obviously something seriously wrong in your work. You must have made some mistakes in your weighings.
