A substance that is made of only one kind of atom - or only one kind of molecule. In other words, an element or a chemical compound. In other words, a substance that can be defined by a chemical formula. Water is H20. Table salt is NaCl. Table sugar (sucrose) is C12H22O11. Other substances, like pepper or toothpaste or apple juice or air, do not have a chemical formula because they are not pure substances, but mixtures of various other substances.
