One of his biggest claims to fame was a series of books on plant classification/taxonomy, including "Manual of the Botany of the Northern United States, from New England to Wisconsin and South to Ohio and Pennsylvania Inclusive" (which has gone through at least 9 editions that I'm aware of, I have #8), Gray's School and Fieldbook of Botany (which was two of his earlier books, "Lessons in Botany" and "Field, Forest and Garden Botany" bound together) , "Elements of Botany", and other books and articles.
He was a botanist/instructor at Harvard University and the University of Michigan, and was one of the first to establish systematic botany in the US. The Asa Gray Award for life achievements in the field of botany named for him.
