Particles vs. Molecules vs. Atoms

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-11-06] [Hit: ]
assuming a compound is two or more atoms chemically joined together.(Therefore, it is possible to have a molecule of an element, as in the diatomic molecules of H2, N2, O2,......
Just a general definition of each and how to distinguish them from each other.

-
Atom - smallest particle of an element.
Molecule - smallest particle of a compound, assuming a compound is two or more atoms chemically joined together. (Therefore, it is possible to have a molecule of an element, as in the diatomic molecules of H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2 and I2, and even P4 and S8.)
Particle - a unique entity

-
Particle can be something small like a grain of sand. You would describe very small pieces of matter as particulate in solution. A molecule is a combination of atoms such as sodium chloride (NaCl) or methane (CH4). An atom is the smallest part of a molecule and would be something like a sodium atom Na, or a hydrogen atom H, or a carbon atom C. Atoms are made of smaller parts, but that is probably unimportant.
