why we are stuck with daylight savings time?
People are debating to get rid of Daylight Savings Time, however there is a paradox that cannot be solved. In New York at summer solstice in June, sunrise is 5:17 AM and sunset is 8:37 PM, it does not get dark until 9 PM. In December, sunset is 4:22 PM at its earliest and sunrise is 7:26 AM at its latest. Now...

answers:
Zirp say: Because some immature rear-orifices think it's "cool" or "funny" to mess up people's circadian rhythm twice a year and make people miss appointments.....and because too many buy into the lie that it gives you more daylight hours
-
Chris say: I don't know
-
goring say: it all depends on what location of the globe one lives
-
John say: I've always wondered about folks who can't seem to be able to change a clock twice a year, like it's some major emotional crisis. California voted to stop it in the last election but it has yet to be ratified. To me it's a great big meh and no, I'm not even Jewish.
-
Ronald 7 say: So that Schoolchildren didn't have to go to School in the Dark
-
az_lender say: Simple. Start school an hour later in winter.
-
Joan H say: If we got to vote on this issue, I would vote for no more Daylight Saving (NOTE: IT'S SAVING, NOT SAVINGS) Time. States can elect to not be on DST. Arizona does not change time twice a year.
-
DEBS say: You had a lot of 'wants'. 'Wants' don't line up with an unsolvable paradox, as you describe it.

The country is bigger than NY. People deal with kids waiting for the bus in the early morning dark all over the country and have since buses existed. 4:30am sunrise is a little early for most, but it is not a 'farmers only' thing. A great number of people wake with the sun. Sorry it doesn't fit into your perception of life.

runningman022003 say: Exactly...Grew up in the North where the summer days and winter nights are much longer than they are in the South. People down in Texas are always complaining about Daylight savings and they don't realize how much a difference it makes as you go further north.
-
Frank say: Daylight savings time should go away. It literally cost billions of dollars lost productivity. It was never necessary in the first place.

Once Trump gets reelected, Maybe we can do something about it.
-
Luke say: Because some idiots thought it would be a good idea.
-
Choose a bloody best answer. It's not hard. say: I'm not sure what the problem is. You say that both outcomes of DST are desirable, then say "we are stuck with it".

EDIT: "I want it dark at 9 PM still in summer, but do not want it to be dark until 8:30 Am in the winter."

Exactly, hence DST.
-
jonniebaby say: It baffles me that some people take the time change so seriously.
-
CarolOklaNola say: If you got rid of daylight saving g time you would have standard time all year long..The reasons for DST ate economic and cultural. Arizona voted down DST. They LIKE being in the same time zone as the west coast, it the Indian reservations in Arizona DO observe DST.

Frankly, I think it would be disastrous if New York state DST did NOT observe DST. You can move to Arizona or Hawaii if you despise DST so much. I lived in Arizona for a year in 1975-1976.

Ian say: There are great benefits to saving daylight https://www.theonion.com/daylight-saving...
-
audrey say: Daylight savings time should be kept all year. Period.
-
Robert say: How about we just leave the clock alone and get up earlier and go to bed earlier seasonally. Changing the clock does nothing. If you want to save the amount of time you are awake in the sunshine adjust your schedule.
-
busterwasmycat say: My thought is that you have it backwards. Regular time is what we use in the winter. If we get rid of DST we don't change the time of sunrise in winter, we make sunrise/sunset earlier in summer. I don't have much use for sun at 4AM when I am sound asleep, personally, and I do enjoy those long evenings of June and July, so I would like to stay with using DST even if it serves no practical purpose.
-
Cei say: More and more countries are ditching it. Even the whole of the EU is going to ditch it next year.
It's an old thing that is simply no longer necessary it was brought in, during the first world war I believe, so that a few farmers would have more light in the morning.
-
say: Dear god. It’s one frickin hour change done twice year.
Cell phones late on night cause sleeping problems far more
-
Acetek say: Just leave it at DST and stop the insanity of switching twice a year
I would prefer ST but DST is fine
