So yes some of it comes from space but it is not the type normally associated with storms.

Adullah M say: When you see the lightening and then later on about 3 seconds ,hear the thunder ,then its mean that the rainy cloud is about 1 kilometer away from us.

say: no earth creates it itself but i seem to remember a paper years ago saying that cosmic rays could also be involved in some storms.
but that is not to say lightning doesn't exist on other planets because it does and there are also conditions in space that could experience lightning.
