Where was the Challenger space shuttle designed to go?......

Where was the Challenger space shuttle designed to go?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
John say: Space.
-
Clive say: Same as all the others. Into Earth orbit.
-
Manuel say: Out into low Earth orbit.
-
Starrysky say: "Boom"
-
Jeffrey K say: Into earth orbit.
-
William say: The space shuttle was an idea originating with Dr. Wernher Von Braun, who wanted a reusable vehicle which could be rocketed into Earth orbit, deliver personnel and equipment to space, particularly to a space station in Earth orbit, and return to the Earth like a glider.

Von Braun's original concept was for the shuttle to sit atop a large fuel tank and rocket, rather than have rockets as part of the shuttle itself. This arrangement would have left open the possibility for crew to survive a catastrophic explosion of the fuel tank and/or rockets.

The Challenger was the second space shuttle after the Columbia. It first flew on April 4, 1983, and completed in total 9 missions before it exploded during launch of its tenth mission on January 28, 1986 killing its 7 crew members including the "First Teacher in Space" Christa McAuliffe.

The Challenger was named after a British ship, the HMS Challenger, which led the Challenger oceanographic expedition of 1873-76.

In August 1985, I watched the Challenger pass overhead 3 nights in a row, once using a small 3-inch reflector. This was its next to last successful mission, STS-51-F.

G. Whilikers say: The STS-51-L mission would have gone to low Earth orbit, released a communications satellite and a reusable astronomy satellite, and featured lessons broadcast from orbit by teacher Christa McAuliffe.
-
Ronald 7 say: Into Low Earth Orbit
But didn't make it
-
Marie K say: around the earth, in orbit
-
say: Near Earth orbit.
-
Bill G say: It was designed to go into space. That is why it was called the "SPACE shuttle".
As others said, it was designed to go into low Earth orbit.
But the space shuttle missions to repair the Hubble space telescope went many more miles above, into a much higher orbit.
-
Robert say: All over Florida
-
Tom S say: All the space shuttles were designed for travel to low Earth orbit.
-
say: it was designed to go into space. that's why they called it a "space shuttle."
-
say: Up is the short answer.
-
Bill-M say: Low Earth Orbit for a few days.
-
poldi2 say: All the shuttles were designed to go into low Earth orbit, to service the Hubble telescope, to deploy other satellites, and to deliver crew and cargo to the ISS.
-
Bela say: Into orbit.
-
Bob Strue say: The ground apparently
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: Just to Earth orbit.
-
Lia say: Ieieidoe
-
say: They were headed to Mars, I'm pretty sure. I never check Google, so who knows really?
-
CarolOklaNola say: Earth orbit. The Shuttles were NEVER going to go to the Moon.
-
say: not Uranus
-
Acetek say: low Earth orbit
-
Sir Caustic say: Wherever a spy or military satellite needed to go.
