Why isn't Earth cold?
Space is cold.
Earth is in space.
Therefore...

answers:
say: Eh Hello. Earth IS cold. It's 4 degrees Celsius here in Ireland and were in fleeced.
-
say: The sun is hot.
-
Clive say: Sun is hot. Earth's atmosphere keeps heat in. Therefore...
-
say: Greenhouse effect
-
Jeffrey K say: The sun warms the earth. The atmosphere holds in some of that heat.
-
goring say: The earth is cooling from the inside and the heath shows up above its crust.
-
Ronald 7 say: Earth's heat comes from Radiation from the Sun
It keeps our Atmosphere warm
-
tham153 say: space has no temperature, objects in space have a temperature based on their own internal heat and proximity to a star
-
say: Therefore, you're a freakin' retard
-
mokrie say: The sun. Rays hit earth and warm it. Rays go into space and keep going until they grow cold.
-
Huh say: It is actually pretty cold in the Midwestern United States.
-
orlando say: Ask god
-
Cc needs coffee say: It is
-
Sanjay say: Conduction, Convection and Radiation control heat loss ....
-
Gabinator say: Come to Siberia and you will surely change your mind
-
Fred say: Because I have an electric heater.
-
JG say: The earth is radiated by the sun. The sun is a giant star millions of times bigger than the Earth.
-
MysteryGuy say: The sun
-
Todd say: We have an atmosphere that traps the sun's energy. It's that simple. This energy is naturally stored by giant heat wells, mostly bodies of water.
-
say: Earth's core is molten metal. Molten because it's being squeezed and bent and compressed. And supposedly nuclear reactions as well.
And the core is very hot, very very hot.
The gravity of the planet maintains an atmosphere. Heat is essentially kinetic energy in molecules. Space is cold because the density of gasses is really really low. So heat propagates poorly.
So the atmosphere acts like a nice blanket for the hot mantle and even hotter core. As well as the crust of course.
A lot of heat radiates away from the planet though.
-
save us say: For the same reason the Sun is hot but space is cold - radiation is an inefficient method of transferring heat between objects.
-
Chris Ancor say: Go for a stroll in the Antarctic. Get back to us on that one.
-
Jim say: Because of the Sun and because it has an atmosphere with Greenhouse gases.
-
drake say: If there is hot black body radiation in space from stars and the sun then space is hot.
-
someg say: It is cold in winter.
-
WHANKING-WILLY say: Only someone incapable of common sense thought would ask that question.
-
busterwasmycat say: It is on its way to that. Time. Earth is big, earth started as very hot, and earth is a good insulator against conductive heat flow, so time matters. Lots of heat times slow rate of heat migration=lots and lots of time needed before the heat can get away.
-
Dixon say: The proper question is why isn't it dried to dust?
-
CarolOklaNola say: Earth's core is hot. Earth rotates fast enough that the hot iron no kel core produces a global magnetic field that protects a relatively thin atmosphere from being blown off by the into space, AND Earth is at the the right distance from the Sun for water to exist on Earth in all three phases at the same time. Water has a high heat capacity is a other reason. It takes a long time for warm water to cool down, but it takes a long time for cold liquid water to heat up..This is why you can go wading or swimming in the Gulf of Mexico in October and the water temperature is in the middle 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Ive done gone wading or swimming in the Gulf in October more than once. Earth radiates more heat in the infrared and microwave than it receives from the Sun. All of those are reasons why Earth is not cold.
