Are galaxies big?

k.a. Kelvin zero, but not quite yet. Everybody understand seven light years because you can have seven cows, been in seven countries,......

Yes they are big
-
They sure are!

Big compared to what? You need to include your frame of reference, compared to a mountain or a planet galaxy's are enormous but compared to the visible universe galaxy's are very small
-
i'm sitting in one right now

Yes galaxies are big compared to many things to show you it took around 20 years for our satellite to leave the Milky Way and it was solar powered, assuming it didn't go from one side to the other
-
Yes, they are. Perhaps a hundre thousand light year, as our Milky Way, which is an average one.

I once read that there is a "hole" in space. A place seven light years wide that is more empty than the rest of the universe. We can measure that because its temperature is a fraction of a degree less than the rest of it. Nearly absolute zero, a.k.a. Kelvin zero, but not quite yet.

Everybody understand seven light years because you can have seven cows, been in seven countries, etc. But nobody - NOBODY - can imagine how big seven light years is, and certainly not the hundred thousand light years of a galaxy.

And this is, perhaps why the Bible says the God created the universe in six days. If anybody had writen at the time of Moses that the universe is 13.7 billion years old, as we date the Big Bang today, nobody would have understood or believed it and the story wouldn't have made it up to today.

Hence, by simple logic, the Bible had to be written to be understood by illiterate nomads of the desert. Something creationists should think about ... but, sorry if I digress. I'll shut up now! ;-)

They are big, but they don't have very many interesting places to go.
