This is completely normal, and happens every month around first quarter (which was Wednesday afternoon this month). The only night the Moon is directly opposite the Sun is on the night of Full Moon, which is next Thursday. Between New Moon and Full Moon, the Moon is always off to one side of the Earth and lit obliquely by the Sun, so visible in the afternoon.
