This is for my maths homework! Please also tell me how you worked it out!
The scale on a road map is 1 : 50,000. Two towns are 20cm apart on the map. Work out the real distance, in km, between the two towns.

Assuming the scale is in cm:
1 cm = 50,000, so 20 = 1,000,000 cm
1,000 cm = .01 km so (add 3 more decimal places) 1,000,000 = 10 km
1 cm = 50,000, so 20 = 1,000,000 cm
1,000 cm = .01 km so (add 3 more decimal places) 1,000,000 = 10 km

The real distance between two towns is 50000 into 20 cms= 10,00000 cms = 100 km.
