The Universe exists as a large space filled with energy and objects.
In simple terms, time is a constant and the universe is described in 3 dimensions. In that form, space is simply the place where there is nothing in the ordinary sense. It is called 'space.'
In the modern sense, we know that there is no place that is empty. Waves and particles of many kinds are passing through everything in the universe. There is nowhere that is full of 'nothing.'
When describing the Universe in the simple sense, we limit ourselves to the human experience. To us, most of the universe is empty space with galaxies and other things that are far apart from each other, and separated by vast amounts of 'space' or 'nothing.'
Now days, scientists are trying to understand more about the universe. They use higher math to do this. One of the mathematical constants they use is the speed of light. You know, E=mass times the speed of light squared. So to use math to solve problems at the extreme limits of our understanding, we have to create mathematical tools which take into account extreme distances and speeds. To simplify the mathematics, a mathematical model was created which combined the ideas of space (as distance) and time. This produces the ability to mathematically model the Universe so that it can be understood in ways that might be useful to our general scientific understanding.
So the 'space' in space time is a mathematical function which is the result of combining distance and time into one function. The word 'space' in the common sense is the vast nothingness between planets and stars.

:-D We understand 'miles' and 'hours.' We also have a function called 'miles per hour' that we understand. 'Space' and 'space-time' are similar useful ideas that let us do scientific work we could not do otherwise.
