A solid cylinder (radius = 0.170 m, height = 0.160 m) has a mass of 14.1 kg. This cylinder is floating in water. Then oil (the specific gravity of the oil = 0.848) is poured on top of the water until the oil rests on water. How much of the height of the cylinder is in the oil?

Work out the density of the cylinder then form an equation for the displacement split between the two liquids, might as well assume it rests with the axis vertical, which it probably wouldn't, then solve it.

mass of cylinder = (volume in water x density of water) + (volume in oil x density in oil)

The area of the cylinder is going to disappear as it is a common term so you'll end up with density of cylinder = (h x water density) + ((l-h) x oil density)

Off you go and solve for h.
