Chemistry help...naming hydrates and writing chemical formulas

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-18] [Hit: ]
3.4.you first name the ionic compound normally (cation,so.........
name the following hyrates: (the * is just supposed to be a dot)
1. K2CO3 * 2H2O
2. AgNO3 * 4H2O
3. FeSO4 * 5H2O
4. Na3PO4 * 7H2O

write the chemical formulas for the following hydrates:
1. sodium chlorite heptahydrate
2. sodium fluoride dihydrate
3. nickel (II) bromide decahydrate
4. lithium nitrite pentahydrate

-
nomenclature is essential in chemistry and hydrates follow a lot of rules of ionic compounds (thankfully)

you first name the ionic compound normally (cation, then anion)

then you name the water part of the hydrate using the latin prefixes for molecular compounds
and adding the word "hydrate"

mono 1
di 2
tri 3
tetra 4
penta 5
hexa 6
hepta 7
octa 8
nona 9
deca 10

so...

potassium carbonate dihydrate
silver nitrate tetrahydrate
iron (II) sulfate pentahydrate
sodium phospate heptahydrate

NaClO * 7H2O
NaF * 2H2O
NiBr2 * 10H2O
LiNO2 * 5H2O
