Those were the days when the anesthetic they use was being administered by dripping it over a nasal mask. They did that to me for my appendectomy in 1948.
Nowadays, you'll just be having a conversation with the anesthesiologist and the next thing you know, you're waking up in the recovery room. That's progress.

oh NO
this new stuff - you watch it go though the tube -
(it's white) you see it hit your 'skin' and BAM - you are so GONE
and then you open your eyes - what am I doing back in my room - ???
I just closed my eyes and 3 hours have gone by
it's GREAT - the appendectomy was fun afterward (not)
all the best

My doctors just asked about my daily life.
He asked what school I went to, how old I was, and where I worked.
I could hear him still mutter something but nothing else I was knocked out by that time
