Norebal say: Given 0.0928 write it in scientific notation.
Key concepts : a ) The effect of multiplying a number by 10 or powers of ten
If it is a decimal number, the decimal point seems to move one place to the right. Ex: 2.987 x 10 = 29.87
If it is a whole number simply add a zero to the right of the number. Ex: 234 x 10 = 2340
b) Multiplying by 100 is equivalent to multiplying a number by ten twice, by 1000 multiply by 10 3 times etc.
c) Multiplying by 10^( -1) is equivalent a dividing by ten. Therefore it is equivalent to moving the decimal point one place to the left.
To write a number in " Scientific notation " the number must be written in the form : A x 10^( n), where A is a decimal number such that : 1.00 = A < 10
Example : Write in scientific notation.: 23000. We assume that the decimal point is at the end of the number.
........ We have 23000. To get A we move the decimal point 4 places to the left. We have now 2.3000, the zeros at the end of a decimal are meaningless, so we do not write them. The number is : 2.3 x 10^( - 4 ).
For the number 0.0928 to become 9.28, we would have to move two spaces to the right, the number becomes:......... 9.28 x 10^ (-2 )
When we move the decimal point 2 places to the right , the number becomes 100 times bigger, to cancel that change divide the number by 100, that is multiply it by 10^(-2 )

Daniel say: You have to multiply 0.0928 by 100 to get to 9.28 so it's 9.28 x10^-2.
Hope this helps

Polyhymnio say: -2
-
Puzzling say: ..... 9.2 8 x 10^-2
0.0 9 2 8
..^---/
You can see that you would have to move the decimal point two places to the left to match the original number. So the exponent needs to be -2.

ProfRay say: You must mean power "negative 2 or negative 3"
-
Michael say: Well,
0.0928 = 9.28 x 10^(-2)
indeed :
9.28 x 10^(-1) = 0.928
and
9.28 x 10^(-2) = 0.0928
hope it' ll help !!

Ricki say: You have to move the decimal place 2 places to the right to get the number in the format 9.28 so it's 9.28 * 10^-2
-
lenpol7 say: How many decimal points have you moved?
0.0928 Becomes 9.28 : you have moved TWO decimal points to the right , so the index number is '-2'.
Hence
0.0928 = 9.28 x 10^-2
-
Paul say: You have to multiply 0.0928 by 100 to get to 9.28 so it's 9.28 x10^-2.
Hope this helps.
