How do i solve equations like this one

Take the absolute value and make whats inside it once equal to -5 and other equal to 5 and solve

4a-2=-5

4a= -3

a=-3/4


4a-2 =5

4a=7

a=7/4

The solution set is { -3/4, 7/4}

According to your question: |4a - 2| = 5

(i) 4a - 2 = 5
4a = 7
a = 7/4

4a = -3
A = -3/4

step 1 add 2 to both sides of equations so 4a-2 + 2 = 5+2 so 4a=7
step 2 devide 4 on both sides so 4a/4=7/4

=-4a+2 for a<1/2

4a-2=5
4a=7
a=7/4 which is >1/2

-4a+2=5
-4a=3
a=-3/4 which is <1/2
