Our genes do determine all of our physical attributes, and studies have shown that our behavour and sexual preferences can be determined by genes as well. But in essence this is the nature versus nurture argument. You'll never be able to come to a fixed answer. I believe that our genes (nature) predispose us towards certain behavioural traits, but it is our upbringing and our value system (nurture) that determines whether we act on these predispositions. This is why serial killers or psychopaths so often come from abusive homes. It is possible that their genetics predisposed them to a life of crime, but it is their upbringing which really pushed them to actually commit an illegal act.

For an excellent introduction to the issue, see the 1996 movie, GATTACA.
Or, in other words, "There is no gene for the human spirit". This is the tagline of the movie.

Not completely. We have minds of our own. We're like the Fett clones (Grand Army of the Republic), but without the altered level of independence. We can think for ourselves.
