To keep it simple nuclear fusion in all sense of the word is an explosion. When we all talk about the biggest explosions that we know of on earth we talk about a nuclear bomb and a bomb is an explosion so to keep it simple it is a nuclear explosion. If you want to get technical than that is a whole other story.
Even at the end of a stars life it explodes.(room for thought).

They say that the sun is converting hydrogen into helium, which is nuclear fusion, and an explosion of sorts. They also say that heavier elements are being formed as well, like gold, iron, carbon, etc. I think what happens is two atoms get smashed together to make one, and some of the excess material is released. Like a hydrogen atom has one electron revolving around a nucleus, and a helium atom has two.

The Sun isn't an explosion. When gases are pulled together by gravity, they gain enough mass to form a sphere. Eventually with enough mass, the atoms (all are hydrogen) smash together at extreme velocity and pressure. The atoms will form into new atoms, but this time, they are Helium. This causes lots of energy, mostly light and thermal energy. This process is called Nuclear Fusion. This is how all stars are formed, and they are not explosions, nor are they fireballs.

nobody really knows for 100% sure it is ASSUMED to be nuclear fusion the fusing of two atoms of hydrogen to produce one atom of helium and a huge amount of energy to be released, the temperature at the center is around 40 million degrees
-
It is a thermonuclear hydrogen fusion explosion held in equilibrium by gravity.
