Last week Yoko earned $385.20. How many hours did she work last week? Its an example from our textbook and when she worked it out, she got 49 hours........
The question is:
Yoko earns 1.5 times her normal hourly pay for each hour that she works over 40 hours in a week. Her normal pay is $7.20 per hour. Last week Yoko earned $385.20. How many hours did she work last week?

It's an example from our textbook and when she worked it out, she got 49 hours... How did she get this? When I asked, she just confused me even more. Help!?

-
7.20*40 + 1.5*7.20*t = 385.20, where t is time in hours over 40 hours.
Solve for t,
t = 9
So, she worked 40+9 = 49 hours.

Let's see how much she earned last week during the first 40 hours at $7.20 per hour:

40*7.20 = 288 dollars during the first 40 hours. However, since she earned a total of $385.20, the money she earned while working overtime was 385.20 - 288 = $97.20

She earned those 97.20 dollars at a pay which is 1.5*7.20 = $10.80 per hour. Therefore, the number of hours she worked overtime is 97.20 / 10.80 = 9 hours overtime. To these 9 hours that she worked overtime we add the 40 hours she worked at regular pay, so she worked 49 hours last week,

I hope this helps...

OK first of all she assumed she worked 40 hours. So u take her normal pay x40 which equals $288. OK so then u take the total which is 385.20. Minus the normal 40pay hours. Which leaves 97.20. I just wanted to get them totals out of the way. OK when u work overtime ur supposed to get "time and a half" is what they call it. So u take her wage, which is 7.20 and divide it in half and u get $3.60. So u add that to her normal pay which = 10.80. So for every hour over 40to she would get the 10.80. So therefore you take the over time pay. Which is 97.20 and divide it by the overtime wage which is 10.80 and u get 9. So she worked 49 hours.

Sounds confusing but if u take simpler numbers its much easier. Like if I get $10/hr my normal 40 hour week would be 400$. But if I worked over those normal 40 hours, I'd start getting time and a half (10÷.5= 5 then 10+5) which Is $15/hr. So for every hr over 40, I'd get 15$/hr.

first check how much she gets in 40 hours, or her regular pay
$7.20 * 40 = $288
subtract that to get what she got from working overtime
385.20 - 228= $96.80
divide that by her pay times 1.5
97.20 / (7.2 * 1.5)
97.20 / 10.8 = 9
there you go
:D
