The question is write an equation in point slope form and one slope intercept form passing through (8,9) with an x-intercept of -4.would that be y-y1=m(x-x1) but i start with change of y2-y1 divided by change of x2-x1? im not sure what to do with the -4 they gave me.-You need to use that -4 they gave you to figure out the slope using slope-intercept.Then,......
I need to write two equations, one in point slope form and one in slope intercept form.

The question is write an equation in point slope form and one slope intercept form passing through (8,9) with an x-intercept of -4.

would that be y-y1=m(x-x1) but i start with change of y2-y1 divided by change of x2-x1? i'm not sure what to do with the -4 they gave me.

You need to use that -4 they gave you to figure out the slope using slope-intercept. Then, once you have it, use that in the point-slope form.

Here two points are A(8,9) and B(-4,0)
Slope = m = (y2-y1)/(x2-x1) = (0-9)/(-4-8) = -9/-12 = 3/4
To find the equation of a line passing through (8,9) or (-4,0) and having slope = 3/4
y-y1 = m(x-x1) ....................(i) by taking point A(8,9)
y -9 = 3/4(x-8)
4y -36 = 3x -24
4y = 3x +12
y = (3/4)x +3 ....................Ans
y-y1 = m(x-x1) ....................(i) by taking point B(-4,0)
y -0 = 3/4(x+4)
4y = 3x +12
y = (3/4)x +3 ....................Ans
In both cases you got the same answer. It means you may chose any point.
I think now are clear about the point B(-4,0), because on x -axis y= 0
