Forgot how to factor? What do I do

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-07] [Hit: ]
these are 8*1 and 4*2.since you know that the middle term is negative, you would need the bigger number to be a negative.(6x+2)(x-4) would be your answer , you can check this by multiplying it out as well.2*-4=-8-There are no factors for the above quadratic expression.......
My problem is: 6x² -22x -8

Can someone show me the steps on how to do this please!

-
6x² -22x -8
= 2[3x^2 -- 12 x + x -- 4]
= 2[3x(x -- 4) + 1(x -- 4)]
= 2(x -- 4)(3x + 1)

-
6x² -22x -8
to factor these there is a basic method where you have to split -22 in a way such that product is same as product of -8 and 6 but this will work only when there are quadratic equations

6x² -22x -8
6x² -24x+2x -8
6x(x-4)+2(x-4)
(x-4)(6x+2)

Start with
(6x(+/-)#)(x(+/-)#)
this gives u 6x^2 for sure.

now you think of factors of 8. these are 8*1 and 4*2.

since you know that the middle term is negative, you would need the bigger number to be a negative.

(6x+2)(x-4) would be your answer , you can check this by multiplying it out as well.

6x*x= 6x^2
6x*-4=-24x
2*x=2x
2*-4=-8

There are no factors for the above quadratic expression. This is where you use the Quadratic formula
