(1-a)^2 but I got it wrong in my test. I wrote 1-a^2 for my answer. What is the actual answer?

It would be 1+2a+a^2
because the problem is in parentheses you have to write it twice (just as if you saw (-3)^2 you would write it as -3 x -3)
(1-a) x (1-a) then you use the FOIL method to solve (first, outer, inner, last)
1 x 1 = 1
1 x a = a
1 x a = a
a x a = a^2
1+a+a+a^2
then you add the two regular a's since they are like terms
1+2a+a^2
I hope this helps! (:

(1 - a)²
(1 - a) (1 - a)
1 - a - a + a²
1 - 2a + a²
(1 - a) (1 - a)
1 - a - a + a²
1 - 2a + a²

FOIL
1-2a+a^2
1-2a+a^2
