Which is a better deal? 6 pencils for $5.34 or 7 pencils for $6.09? Please show work.

You divide the cost by the pencil to find the amount per pencil.

Deal 1:

5.34/6=.89 per pencil

Deal 2:

6.09/7=.87 per pencil

Deal 2 is a better deal.

To figure out which is better, you want to figure out the cost of each individual pencil under the two deals.

6 pencils for $5.34
5.34/6
6 doesn't go into 5, so bring up the decimal and bring down the 3
6 goes into 53 a total of 8 times, so add the 8 after the decimal. 6*8 is 48, and 53-48 = 5. Bring down the 4
6 goes into 54 a total of 9 times, so add the 9 after the previous 8. 6*9=54 and 54-54 is 0.
Total price per pencil = $0.89

7 pencils for $6.09
6.09/7
7 doesn't go into 6, so bring up the decimal and bring down the 0.
7 goes into 60 a total of 8 times, so add the 8 after the decimal. 7*8 = 56. 60-56 = 4. Bring down the 9.
7 goes into 49 a total of 7 times, so add the 7 after the decimal. 7*7 = 49 and 49-49=0.
Total price per pencil = $0.87

It's a better deal, therefore, to buy the 7 pencils for $6.09 since you're only paying 87 cents a pencil as opposed to 89 cents.

5.34 divided by 6 = .89
6.09 divided by 7= .87

7 pencils is a better deal because each pencil is 2 cents less..

Then Divide 6.09 by 7...yu get 0.87
Thats each pencil costs $0.87

So 7 for 6.09 is a better deal cuz yu get a profit of $0.02 on each pencil
