I have another algebra problem that I'm having trouble with. 13(3-2x)+4(x+1)=7

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-25] [Hit: ]
For example, that 3 - 2x becomes 3 + -2x. You would then distribute, combine like-terms, then add or subtract to both sides.distribute: (13 * 3) + (13 * -2x) + (4 * x) + (4 * 1) = 7 (* means times.......
I'm getting confused in what I add together and what I subtract. How do I solve this and what is the rule that will help me with knowing when I add or subtract? Thanks so much for your help.

You never subtract or divide in algebra. For example, that 3 - 2x becomes 3 + -2x. You would then distribute, combine like-terms, then add or subtract to both sides.

original problem: 13 (3 - 2x) + 4 (x + 1) = 7
subtraction becomes addition: 13 (3 + -2x) + 4 (x + 1) = 7
distribute: (13 * 3) + (13 * -2x) + (4 * x) + (4 * 1) = 7 (* means times. I just put * to not confuse it with x)
simplify: 39 + -26x + 4x + 4 = 7
combine like-terms: (39 + 4) + (-26x + 4x) = 7
simplify: 43 + -22x = 7
because we want to get x on 1 side, let's subtract 43 from the left side of the equals sign: -11x = 7 - 43
simplify: -22x = -36
divide both sides by -22: x = 36/22 = 18/11 = 1 7/11

So x = 1 7/11 (one and seven elevenths)

EDIT: I got the answer wrong before and corrected it. I got the thumbs down before I corrected it.

first you gotta distribute the parenthesis:

13(3-2x) = 39-26x

4(x+1) = 4+4x

then just add like terms (the x's and the real numbers)

43-22x = 7

now just subtract your 43 and divide by -22
-22x = -36

cancel out the negatives
22x = 36

simplify
11x = 18

divide
x = 18/11 or 1 7/11

-
13(3-2x)+4(x+1)=7
you simplify by multiplying then adding like terms
multiply 13(3 -2x) = 39- 26x and 4(x+1) = 4x +4
so know you have
39-26x + 4x +4 =7
43 - 22x =7
-22x = -36
x = 36/22 = 1.636

-
13(3-2x)+4(x+1)=7

39 - 26x + 4x + 4 = 7

- 22x + 44 = 7

- 22x = 37

x = - 37/22

-
13(3-2x)+4(x+1)=7
39-26x+4x+4=7
43-22x=7
-22x=7-43
-22x=-36
x=(-36)/(-22)
x=18/11
