As long as the British were there (in India) to the south of Tibet, Tibet though nominally under the suzerainty of Chinese Emperor maintained its separate identity as a cultural entity (living their own Shangri-la) and every move had to be gone through after consultation with the British in India.
While being the Imperial rulers of India, the British protected India well & maintained its unity at all costs. It is the successor 'independent' regimes to the south of Tibet that failed in that basic duty of protecting the territory tells a lot on the character of the people who demanded independence. Tibet indirectly owed a lot to the British Imperialism.
