Tom say: Time is not THE 4th dimension it is A 4th Dimension.---And somewhat different than the other s spatial dimensions Sometimes a 5th Dimension is mentioned---which is considered to be the FOURTH Spatial dimension..
There are likely more dimensions than that, but those are the usual ones we mess with for the most part. the 4th and 5th get interchanged, depending what we are talking about.

Of course dimensions are simple "Directions" NOT Parallel or alternate universes, which are altogether different "animals" so to speak. they are other 3D universes that lie in the DIRECTION of a 4th spatial dimension, however.

They may even be a near infinite series, with a slight overlap---like each universe having 4 dimensions, but our 4th may be the first (like x) if the next universe in the sequence, while our 1st may be the 4th in the universe "beneath" us.---Could explain the religious traditions of 3 interconnected universes Hell, Midguard and Heaven---ad infinitum.

poornakumar b say: Physically there is no such thing as 5th dimension. Time was added as 4th dimension due to Einstein & his theories. One shouldn't read too much into it.

Clifford say: When scientists talk about spacetime they say it is a woven fabric of space and time which would be 4 dimensions in all. But then scientists talk about the curvature of spacetime which would seem to imply the existence of a 5th dimension. This 5th dimension actually functions as a 4th spacial dimension as far as the 3 dimensions of spacetime are concerned. I actually prefer to refer to time as the 5th dimension simply because time is not responsible for spacetime curvature.

dawgdays say: M-theory posits the existence of 11 dimensions, our usual three spatial dimensions plus time, plus seven others. But these seven are also expected to be very small, and not perceivable in the macroscopic world. So to try to label them as we do with height, width, depth, is not useful to us, so no one bothers.
