we are asked to draw a circuit diagram that shows how to connect an ammeter through the resistor and voltmeter across the resistor

-
Ammeter is connected in a series with circuit, while voltmeter is connected parallel to the circuit.

-
Yes you can .. just look at the branch of the parallel circuit you are looking into as a basic series circuit and do as teh nice little diagram shows in one of the answers. The lines on your schematic shouldnt be thought of as wires or actual things that HAVE to be there but as a single point that

The ammeter goes in seies in any part of the circuit.
The voltmeter is connected across the resistor (+ to more positive side, - to the other).
(+)-----------A--------a/\/\/\/\/b----… (-)
..Ammeter^.............^Resistor......
(a) to voltmeter positive, (b) to voltmeter negative.

In addition to the previous two answers, I suggest have a look at the electronics materials (Electronics - DC) at WISC-ONLINE.
