How to share an invention to everyone for free

My idea is similar to GNU General Public License, whereas the specs and blueprints (or prototype) of an invention is shared to the whole world (via web), that anyone can manufacture or improve without buying its patent or paying royalties (i.e. to me). The result will be high quality, but cheaper products. The problem is, it is not protected. It seems that anyone can patent the published invention, and claim its benefits all for himself, which totally destroys the objective for high quality and cheaper products.
I already thought of using GNU-GPL for this, but when I emailed the contact of GNU-GPL regarding this, I haven't received any response at all for about 3 wks now. I assume that GNU-GPL is not enough to protect a shared invention, that I am prompted to make this inquiry.
Anyone who can shed light on this, shall have my full heart-felt gratitude. Many thanks in advance and God bless.

I am not sure, but I think a patent can be invalidated if:
The true inventor is not named [As I recall, LASIK has this skeleton in its closet]
THe invention has been described in the literature

I think I have heard of a movement such as you describe. Try some open source fora and see if anyone there can refer you.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defensive_p… which is about publishing an idea in order to make it no longer patentable. THat should do what you want.

See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inequitable… at the end of the second paragraph.

By publishing you make it prior art. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prior_art

If you want to release an invention to the world, and need to counter the claims of someone arguing that they had the idea first, all you need to do is prove anteriority. Make the required drawing and specification on hard copy, which you mail to yourself registered mail, and you do not open it, you save the document. The post office date on the envelope would prove the moment where you decided to release the idea, and whoever would claim to have had that idea before would have the burden of proof.
