Please explain it in plain terms!

Electrolytes are usually types of salts that have been dissolved in a liquid. They have charges. For instance, when you dissolve salt(NaCl) in water, you get Na+ and Cl-. Basically, dissolving the salt broke it down into its components. They affect the pH balance of cells, and regulate other functions such as sodium and water intake in cells.

An electrolyte is a substance that dissociates into ions when fused or in solution and thus becomes capable of conducting electricity an ionic solute. In biological systems electrolytes are solutions of acids, bases,or salts.and electrolyte solutions can also result from the dissolution of some biological (e.g DNA,polypeptides,) and synthetic polymers. An electrolyte in a solution may be described as concentrated if it has a high concentration of ions,or dilute if it has a low concentration.

It's a substance which contains free ions -- atoms or molecules that have more/less electrons than protons, which allows them to conduct electricity.
