During this type of reaction, Carbon 14 has 2 extra neutrons in the nucleus. Because this is an unstable isotope, a nuclear reaction occurs, causing it to decompose into nitrogen. This occurs because one of the neutrons in the nucleus actually turns into a proton, and an electron is ejected out of the neutron.
