Well one of the greatest things achieved with carbon dating is we managed to find out the age of our planet and on top of that disproving what some religious groups believe (i.e. that God created the world 6000 years ago, not saying He didnt create the world but more likely if He did then He would've created it a lot earlier).

radioactive dating tells us how old something is, you can work it out from the half life of that substance. So you know how much it has originally, you know it's half life and then you can work out how many years it's been around for (:

Because of radioactive dating, we are better able to identify the age of a fossil, which helps us to get a better understanding of the ancient world.
