Why is Aluminium oxide or broken porcelain used for cracking

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-14] [Hit: ]
It is for my chemistry homework.-I am assuming you are referring to Cracking of Hydrocarbons.Aluminium Oxide among others is used because it is a catalyst for the reaction. It lowers the activation energy for the cracking. This is necessary to not only to make it easier but also cheaper to crack usually alkanes or alkenes.Hope I helped.......
Cracking = when larger molecules are broken down into smaller molecules by heating.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!!! xx

PS. It is for my chemistry homework.
