Yahoo currently shows a "surfer dude" on a 90 foot wave. Yet earthquakes have resulted in subsequent "tsunamis" of less than 3 feet. So when is a wave a tsunami?

Yeah yahoo does..Even u can see them in movies... They are often called Tidal waves *in movies*.
but *tidal waves* are predictable waves. that comes and goes periodically. Usually caused by moon and sun's gravitational pull. Tidal waves usually raise the water level by several feet in just a few hours.
Whereas a tsunami is caused when some event disturbs the ocean. An earthquake can perhaps trigger an underwater landslide. The water above such an event rises or falls, creating a surface wave that can travel at hundreds of miles an hour.
A tsunami wave isn’t necessarily very tall in the open ocean a few inches to a few feet different from the level of the ocean around it. But it can be very long, so when it approaches land, the water piles up causing devastation.
