Hi, I'm writing a novel about Yellowstone going off, and I wanted to know how cold it would get if ash were in the air--atmosphere--like so much ash you could barely see the sun. (The people are too far off for the lava to hit them and they have masks on and stuff, so don't worry about that).

look up nuclear winter, which is the same basic idea, the suspension of so much dust in the upper atmosphere that it brings on cooling at the surface. There is precedent for substantial cooling following a very large volcanic eruption, and not just the moderate cooling we got after Pinitubo in 1993(?), but snow in July cold (not every day but it snowed in every month), like with the year without summer (look that one up in wikipedia) that followed the explosion of Tamboro in the 1800s, or the cold year that followed Krakatoa.
And of course, Yellowstone would likely be bigger than Tambora or Krakatoa, so seeing May or October temperatures in July would not be surprising. Be a big problem with crops. Lots of starving would probably happen.

It wouldn't really be cold, it would be hot.
The sun's UV rays would penetrate the cloud and heat up the surface, but the heat would be unable to escape, so it would create a greenhouse effect.
