Seen them twice in Tromso (Norway) and Iceland. Best time to see is +/- February nights.
What you do not realise is that it is not just a part of the sky but the whole sky can be lit up by the coloured swirls!
Also what is amazing is the speed they change, and how the whole sky or just part can change as you watch.
Very difficult to photo as it is all whispy nothing that the human eye can see but ordinary camera lenses cannot "see" the different colours against the black night sky.
You can read on Wikipedia how they sun's "solar wind" and the earths magnetic field create the effect but nothing can prepare you for the actual thing!
One if the world's great shows!
