How do you write out a balanced equation for this reaction

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-10-17] [Hit: ]
-You start with the basic formula for combustion of a compound with carbon, hydrogen,..........
If one of the impurities in diesel fuel has the formula C2H6S, what products will be formed when it burns? Enter a balanced chemical equation for the reaction. Include physical states for all species.

Please explain how you found it.

You start with the basic formula for combustion of a compound with carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur in the formula:
C2H6S + _O2 --> _CO2 + _H2O + _SO2
then I usually start with balancing the C's:
C2H6S + _O2 --> 2(CO2) + _H2O + _SO2
...and then go on with the H's:
C2H6S + _O2 --> 2(CO2) + 3(H2O) + _SO2
...but now I notice that if the coefficient of H2O is odd, I won't be able to get both sides balanced since nothing else on the right side of the equation can be odd (to make the side total even) and nothing on the left side of the equation can be odd, so I have to double everything I have so far to make it all come out even:
2(C2H6S) + _O2 --> 4(CO2) + 6(H2O) + _SO2
...and now I continue with the S's:
2(C2H6S) + _O2 --> 4(CO2) + 6(H2O) + 2(SO2)
...and now I finish with the O's:
2(C2H6S) + 9(O2) --> 4(CO2) + 6(H2O) + 2(SO2)

That's how I get the balanced equation for the reaction. Does the question give you the physical state for C2H6S? I think it's liquid, but I admit that I don't know how to tell from the formula. I do, however, know that O2 should be a gas, and CO2 and SO2 should also be gases. H2O should be liquid.

Hope this helps!
