Can someone tell me what in the world did I just do

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-08-27] [Hit: ]
Like when you pour vinegar with baking soda or a soda into a cup and I saw a white gas coming out of the bucket but blowing opposite from me. Realizing what I may have done was, well, stupid, I ran back inside the house. I came back out and it calmed down still had bubbles on the side of the bucket but I didnt see any gas so I covered my nose and dumped whatever I had into the street.......
So me being bored at home saw a video of how to make your own acid washed jeans. Well all you really need is bleach and water so I grabbed what I needed. But realizing that I don't have enough bleach I find chlorine free bleach and think, "heck, its the same damn thing" So I go outside pour the water and then the bleach. But then when I added the chlorine free bleach, It started bubbling and fizzing. Like when you pour vinegar with baking soda or a soda into a cup and I saw a white gas coming out of the bucket but blowing opposite from me. Realizing what I may have done was, well, stupid, I ran back inside the house. I came back out and it calmed down still had bubbles on the side of the bucket but I didn't see any gas so I covered my nose and dumped whatever I had into the street. So can someone tell me what did I just do. This also, I used publix brand bleach and publix brand non chlorine bleach which says it has hydrogren peroxide. Im feeling fine back inside the house. Just need to know what I did

Non-chlorine bleach contains hydrogen peroxide, chlorine bleach contains hypochlorite. So I'd guess the fumes are probably oxygen gas. The smoke could be due to heat.

NaOCl + H2O2 → O2 + NaCl + H2O

That is the reaction. As you can see oxygen gas is given off which certainly isn't going to hurt you.

However, don't make a habit of adding bleach to water as when dissolved in a solution of water, it will slowly decompose, releasing chlorine, oxygen, and sodium hydroxide.
4 NaClO + 2 H2O → 4 NaOH + 2 Cl2 + O2

Basically, you produced some oxygen in a reaction between the normal bleach, which usually contains sodium hypochlorite, and hydrogen peroxide, is my guess:

NaClO + H2O2 -> NaCl + H2O + O2

That's not very dangerous to breathe in (a little chlorine gas may have been produced from the chlorine bleach, though most likely not in any harmful amount). Next time before you do such experiments, maybe google the active ingredients to see if something harmful might happen. Running away and avoiding to breathe in any gas was certainly a sensible thing to do, however :D

"You polluted by dumping a surfactant into your sewer"

You have provided the final tipping point to global warming. The problems of the next 100 years and all the people that will die because of it will be traced back to what you did.
