What country did Gregor Mendel work in

After World War I the Empire was broken up and Brno found itself inCzechoslovakia, now called the Czech Republic.......
For a biology project, I need to name the "country pertinent to the biologists life or work." The biologist of my project is Gregor Mendel. I keep seeing lots of Austrian Empire, German Family and Czechoslovakia, but I'm not sure what exactly answers my question. I have read about twenty websites trying to find this answer, but I keep seeing the same exact thing. I see that he worked as a gardener and studied beekeeping, but in what country? I'm really confused. Could somebody help me out here? Please, don't copy the wikipedia article, I have seen it several times in other answers.

-
Mendel's Augustinian monastery was in Brunn that was a part of Austria in 1865 (now called Brno, it is a part of the Czech Republic today because of the various wars altering national borders.)

His genetic expts were conducted in a monastary in Brno, Moravia-Silesia, which at that time was part of the larger Austro-Hungarian Empire. After World War I the Empire was broken up and Brno found itself in Czechoslovakia, now called the Czech Republic.
