Does it have something to do with the concentration gradient

-
The thylakoid membrane is impermeable to the protons, so it helps with the generation of a proton gradient required for chemiosmosis. It also contains the stalked particles and ATP synthase which allow the protons to diffuse down their concentration gradient and give off energy to drive the phosphorylation of ADP.
