Would it make sense to call Planet 9 (if it is found) Nibiru?
I heard some people want to name it "Bowie" but I feel like Nibiru would sound way cooler.

answers:
retired old sarge say: How about just calling it HEAVEN... after all your god and angles were really just extraterrestrials.. and the one who came down in a fiery chariot... a alien in his space ship as they didn't have a different word to call it back then a few thousand years ago.
-
ReductioAdAstronomicus say: Let's storm the IAU. Make them revert Pluto to planet 9. They can't turn us all into dwarves.
-
Raymond say: No.
Nibiru is an ancient Babylonian name for a God, and the name was used, around 3000 years ago, for the planet we call Jupiter.
In the science-fiction story "The Twelfth Planet" (Sitchin, around 1970), the name was used for a fictitious planet, in orbit around our Sun, that had its perihelion near the orbit of Earth, and its aphelion so far away that it had an orbital period of around 3700 years. In the story, the inhabitants of Nibiru need gold for their survival, and Earth is the only planet with it. Therefore, they created us (humans) to be their slaves. Every 3700 years, they come to collect their gold. The next collection should take place soon after the year 2085 (the author had a reason for it to NOT be before 2085).

The name Nibiru was combined with that of a fake planet called "Planet X" (created for the end of the world of May 2003) for the Big 2012 Hoax: the so-called Mayan-Calendar end-of-the-world.

IF (this is a mighty big if) the IAU were stupid enough to use that name for a real planet, I hope they would wait until planet 12.

Ronald 7 say: I would call it Fred
-
daniel g say: Well, what there is for a planet 9 and 10 already have names, but the IAU doesn't recognize these objects as planets. Minor planets with orbits not quite in the system ecliptic, that could make them more asteroids.
Search up Eris and Sedna for example.
-
Deepinthaharta say: It would make more sense if it were ancient deity. I vote for Apollo.
-
Loser say: Hell yeah! And if the IAU refuse we can protest outside their offices.
-
billrussell42 say: no one is going to want to name it Nibiru, a name so popular with doomsday prophets and conspiracy theorists on the internet.
-
cosmo say: Planets are named for Greek or Roman Titans or Gods. Nibiru is not such a name.
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: Eh... it's up to the IAU... We can suggest, but that's about it.
-
poldi2 say: Neither is a good name. The IAU would determine the name: planets are named after various Greek and Roman gods. There are other rules as well, so it would not be Bowie.
I think Planet 9 is a perfect name for it.
-
Bill-M say: Nibiru is already taken.  It is the old name for Jupiter.
-
CarolOklaNola say: We, meaning scientists, specifically Dr. Michael Brown, have to confirm that Planet 9 exists visually before the IAU can open suggestions for names. Nibiru is the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian name for the planet Jupiter and the the mythical star that is supposedly the Sun's binary companion. Very likely one asteroid already has that name.
-
In say: Despite what the International Astronomical Union says, planet 9 is named Pluto. Beyond Pluto, other Kuyper belt objects of significant size include Eris, Haumea, Makemake, Gonggong, Quaor, Sedna, 2002MS4, Orcus, and Salacia.
