oldschool say: Didn't you ever read any science fiction? Mars is populated to a) avoid certain death, b) defeat an alien power, c) man a scientific outpost, d) complete 2 year prison guard obligation etc

say: The fact is, the Earth will not be able to support the entire human race indefinitely, so alternatives need to be given serious consideration, even if it may be a few hundred years before it is needed. The logistics issue would be massively difficult, even if was possible to live on another planet.

English Guy say: Like it or not, there is no choice. This planet is going to become unable to support life. Mars is the nearest planet with water, therefore the most obvious choice. People are not going to have a choice, or if you like, it's live on Mars or fry here.
