wereq say: g'damn that was incredibly difficult to read. For the vast majority of scientists it isn't about money. It's about knowledge. I'd rather everyone have knowledge I figured out than just my kids having my money. The short answer is that we do it for the good of humanity and we aren't selfish jackholes.

save us say: Probably about 90% of all science is done by grunts working in a lab for mining companies, tech companies etc earning a wage. Some scientists can make $250 000 per year. People like me do science for the love of science and to contribute to the knowledge of mankind.
For those who publish their scientific research it offers a measure of immortality. I recently published an article in a peer reviewed science journal. That means that 100 years from now another scientist can still reference my work and build on it but who will remember who did the plumbing on a house somewhere?
It is science that is responsible for the development of virtually every piece of technology we have. that's why.

Satan Claws say: I hope you're able to convince kids in your country not to study sciences when they grow up, because that's an opportunity for qualified immigrants to go there to study and take up high qualification jobs for a while, then return with their knowledge to their home countries to improve those contries' economy once their visa expires. say: If it wasn't for the Science, you would not know how to make pipe. Even if I dropped a ton of copper ore at your front door and left you to process it and make copper pipe of the right strength...or even iron ore. You would be just as much in trouble. Science had to happen FIRST. We have not finished discovering and inventing stuff. Yes you make a good living but so too can anyone else because it is so simple that a plumber is not needed. It is DIY
