Is a major in Astronomy worth while

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-11-02] [Hit: ]
-the way things are going economically, a major in practically anything isnt worth it.the chance of finding a job in any specific field is slim, plus youll be thousands of dollars in debt. you wont have the ability to wait it out until something in your field opens up, youll be forced to take the first mcjob thats willing hire you to pay off your student loans.......
I am considering majoring in either Astronomy or Meteorology (the study of weather). I've been told that an astronomy degree is not worth it and it is useless and I won't find a job. Is that true? If I wanted to do something with Astronomy should I major in Psychics and then master in Astronomy? Would I need a PhD? Should I just stick with Meteorology? I'm fine with either one but Astronomy is so much more interesting.

Sorry for all the questions, 10 points will be awarded for best answer, I promise!

There are very few jobs in astronomy if you don't have a PhD in astronomy or physics. You'd major in physics (note spelling) and then do the PhD in physics or astronomy; astronomy as a major really isn't useful for anything, and that includes astronomy, which is why most schools don't offer it.

They are partly right; it isn't very easy to find a job with a lot to do with astronomy. If you enjoy learning about it, then I would suggest minoring in it. You don't have to take my advice, of course.

If you really like astronomy, go for it... Things will sort themselves out in the end. Better to have a job you like than one you dont - regardless of pay, etc..

Do meteorology.

There are more jobs available, and the general scientific training involved will not tie you down to one subject area.

Meteorology is far more interesting than astronomy. It's just that what many folks call "astronomy" is just empty speculation that they have endured on the hysteria channel. Real astronomy is not like that at all.

Cheers!
