We have 1 billion years left in this planet, by 5 billion years, the suns outer layers will expand, making the sun a red giant. The reason for this is, is because of the core getting too hot and compressing.
The stars outer layers get too hot, so they get further away from the core. Making a cool red fire burning color.
By 1 billion years from now, we will be a type 2-3 civilization, that is if we haven't killed ourselves.
Type 1 civilization controls planetary power, such as volcanoes, weather, and even oceans.
Type 2 gets power off their mother star to power up their huge machines, once they have exhausted all their stars energy, they become galactic.
Same with type 3. We might be able to get to another planet in a couple million years from now.
Hope this helped.
If we're constrained to never go faster than light, trillions of stars would die of old age before we could ever get to them. We humans may or may not ever be able to figure out how to travel faster than light.
But let's assume we could for a moment.
Imagine a spaceship able to go so fast that it could reach a different star each day, with the purpose of looking for new civilizations like Captain Kirk.
Our galaxy alone has 200 billion stars in it. At the visiting rate of a star a day, it would take such a spaceship 547 million years to explore them all. During such an amount of time, we evolved from a time so ancient that shells were not invented yet by life on Earth to our present state. Millions of alien civilizations in series could begin, colonize nearby stars, and die out during that amount of time.
And that's only exploring one galaxy among trillions.
