The Big Bang Model will always be a theory in the scientific sense, because it is just that--a model. Given this state of expansion, if we are to extrapolate to the past at t=0, all of our laws of physics break down, a point in time we call the singularity. So far, the singularity is the largest problem for this model, because it is only there to serve as a substitute for something that we do not understand. Nevertheless, the Big Bang Theory is widely accepted in the scientific community.

People often say that the Big Bang is “only a theory.” It’s important to remember that the term “theory” in science is not the same as it is in general usage. A scientific theory is a unifying concept that explains a large body of data. It is a hypothesis that has withstood the test of time and the challenge of opposing views.
