I just got my PhD in physics but someone was talking about how this is the case. I dont understand, I am shaking at how disappointed I would be in myself if I have gone throughout my life with a warped world view. If we are on the same planet, how does this make sense. I am astonished,......
This isn't the case, right? I just got my PhD in physics but someone was talking about how this is the case. I don't understand, I am shaking at how disappointed I would be in myself if I have gone throughout my life with a warped world view. If we are on the same planet, how does this make sense. I am astonished, I am surely mistaken and the earth has the same season around the world as we are all the same distance from the sun, right?!?!

Well, I am in Australia right now and I can tell you we are in Spring, coming into our Summer which starts officially on 1st December.

The reason why the two hemispheres have opposite seasons is because the earth is tilted on its axis at around 23 degrees. During the year that it takes the earth to circle the sun, only one half of the planet has is facing the sun (summer); the other side is facing away (winter).

You need to look it up on Google to see a diagram which will explain it better.

But yes, its true, and yes, you did manage to get a PhD in physics without understanding basic geographical facts about the planet you live on that are taught (in Australia at least) in primary school.

Erm no, there isn't the same season around the world. So yes if it's Summer in Australia it is Winter in North America. But in South America it's upside also, Summer from December to March and Winter from June to September
