Hurricanes...? Reassurance please!

but that was only once. The flood from Katrina was because New Orleans is a city built under sea level and the levys broke ( I always said they would ) but the flood is what killed people not the hurricane. You still want to stock up on things for the home but the good thing with hurricanes you always know in advance when they are coming. You can be cautious and stay away from windows. If you have ever been near a tornado then remember that tornadoes are MUCH WORSE! As for hurricanes,......
I don't live somewhere where a hurricane could hit (Colorado) but I LOVE New York and I want to live there in college. Please give me reassuring facts that NY will be OK and the world isn't going to end!

Well if the world ends I don't think it'll be by hurricanes. I'm from Louisiana and my favorit time of year was hurricane season! I've been though SEVERAL and most of them we sat on the front porch during. The worst parts were when the power went out for over a week in the La heat, but that was only once. The flood from Katrina was because New Orleans is a city built under sea level and the levys broke ( I always said they would ) but the flood is what killed people not the hurricane.

If you have ever been near a tornado then remember that tornadoes are MUCH WORSE! As for hurricanes, I've always loved the cool winds that came with them, especially during the HOT summer months, so I like to open the door and look out and if it's not horrible I'll stand outside. I'm in Texas now and I'm so jealous of my family in South Carolina now. Irene has sent them an incredible breeze but unfortunately they only got storm clouds no rain.
As far as NY you may not see another one in that area for another 40 years I don't believe they are all that common in that part of the US. I know they are worried about flooding so they might not run the subways and if they ever evacuate then I would go just to be safe. :)

1. Hurricanes lose strength the further from the tropics they go, and/or when they make landfall
2. Irene is scheduled to hit 3 states before even making it further north to NYC
3. It will not likely be a hurricane anymore by the time it reaches NYC
4. It is currently being downgraded.

It's a category 2. There will be some flooding, traffic jams, and power outages for a few days. People are just overreacting. Watch- after it's over you'll see people wading in amoeba water and complaining about the heat and lack of facebook. Category 2 storms are a joke.

It'll be fine. Most likely it'll just be a severe thunderstorm by the time it gets up to NYC. I live in philly and am not even that worried.
